MY BIOGRAPHYBackground and how I came to be interested and involved in politics. I was born in Guernsey and have lived here all my life, I married my husband during 1973 and we have two grown up children and two grand-children. Often I used to read the Guernsey Press and listen to the radio wondering why the States had come to a particular decision, most times I was in agreement but others seemed to go against the general opinion of friends and colleagues. As the Vale parish held monthly political meetings with their Deputies to discuss the current Billet D’Etat I decided to go along and listen. I found the whole experience fascinating and it wasn’t long before I was asking questions and received detailed answers. This was the starting block for me. It was at these meetings that one of the Deputies approached me and asked if I would be interested in standing at the next general election. I knew I really did want to do this and discussed the idea with my family all of whom were extremely supportive, and still are. I spent several months finding out what was involved, how much time would be needed, I also watched and listened to many debates sitting in the public gallery. I have always enjoyed politics and thought if I was lucky enough to be elected it would be my chance to speak up on behalf of the Vale parishioners. 1994 - After walking the Parish delivering my manifestos and meeting as many parishioners as possible the polling day arrived. It was with great delight that I received enough votes for me to be elected into 4th place. I now had to work hard to fulfil my promise & commitment to do my best to represent the Vale electorate. 1997 - During my previous 3yr term as a Deputy representing the Vale parishioners I found myself inundated with work from residents all over the island that I decided to stand for Conseiller and get an island-wide mandate. Much to my delight I was fortunate enough to be elected 4th out of the 6 members elected for a 6yr term. Following the Conseiller elections the members of the States, by a majority, decided to change the current system by reducing the 6yr democratically elected term of Conseiller to 3yrs and subsequently have all members of the Government face another election in 3yrs time when all would become Parish Deputies with a 4yr term. 2000 - So after 3 yrs as a Conseiller I stood as a Vale Deputy to represent solely the Vale Parishioners and was delighted to be elected for a 4yr term. 2004 - Time seemed to race by and before I knew it another term of office was coming to an end and another election time was looming. I once again asked the Vale Parishioners if I could continue working on their behalf and was overjoyed when the results came in that this was the case. I thank my proposers and seconders in each of the elections for their support and encouragement along with many thanks to the Vale parishioners for the honour to serve them. 2008 - May came around very quickly with some fine weather for walking the Parish delivering my manifesto's and speaking with as many people as possible during the day and early evening, unfortunately its impossible to see everyone owing to many being out when i called. Its impossible to call back with such a large Parish but I still prefer calling and try catching people at home rather than posting manifestos. Once again I am extremely grateful to my proposer and seconder supporting my nomination. Election night came and I was delighted and honoured to be elected to represent our Parishioners for another 4year term. |
