Education

We must ensure that we ‘spend to save’ wherever possible on training and education schemes, whatever age group.  Some very successful training schemes were implemented at Social Security where many later found work, some returning after several years either unable to work for various reasons or unemployed. These training schemes are a success for all involved.  How much better these people felt being valued in our community and are now paying contributions and saving on the benefit claims.  Time spent supporting and training someone is money well spent, its an investment within our community.

During a States debate I made my opinion clear that I was totally against implementing student loans, in my mind that was a very retrograde step.

Full encouragement must be given to those attending University to return.  On occasions some have felt let down by Government and businesses refusing employment suggesting they work outside of the island to gain experience, unfortunately some do not return.

I was concerned that during States debate one States member was still harping on that the 11+ must be reviewed again with a view to make all schools comprehensive.  Apart from being very unsettling for all those involved in education, it is not that long since we had a very long debate on this matter and the States resolved by a majority to keep the 11+.  This was the outcome supported by the majority of those who contacted me at the time.
